Numerical modeling techniques for noise emission of free railway wheels

AbstractIn this article, we consider the numerical prediction of the noise emission from a wheelset in laboratory conditions. We focus on the fluid–structure interaction leading to sound emission in the fluid domain by analyzing three different methods to account for acoustic sources. These are a discretized baffled piston using the discrete calculation method (DCM), a closed cylindrical volume using the boundary element method (BEM) and radiating elastic disks in a cubic enclosure solved with the finite element method (FEM). We provide the validation of the baffled piston and the BEM using measurements of the noise emission of a railway wheel by considering ground reflections in the numerical models. Selected space-resolved waveforms are compared with experimental results as well as with a fluid–structure interaction finite element model. The computational advantage of a discretized disk mounted on a baffle and BEM compared to FEM is highlighted, and the baffled pistons limitations caused by a lack of edge radiation effects are investigated.

Finite element modeling and analysis of effect of preexisting cervical degenerative disease on the spinal cord during flexion and extension.

Recent studies have emphasized the importance of dynamic activity in the development of myelopathy. However, current knowledge of how degenerative factors affect the spinal cord during motion is still limited. This study aimed to investigate the effect of various types of preexisting herniated cervical disc and the ligamentum flavum ossification on the spinal cord during cervical flexion and extension. A detailed dynamic fluid-structure interaction finite element model of the cervical spine with the spinal cord was developed and validated. The changes of von Mises stress and maximum principal strain within the spinal cord in the period of normal, hyperflexion, and hyperextension were investigated, considering various types and grades of disc herniation and ossification of the ligamentum flavum. The flexion and extension of the cervical spine with spinal canal encroachment induced high stress and strain inside the spinal cord, and this effect was also amplified by increased canal encroachments and cervical hypermobility. The spinal cord might evade lateral encroachment, leading to a reduction in the maximum stress and principal strain within the spinal cord in local-type herniation. Although the impact was limited in the case of diffuse type, the maximum stress tended to appear in the white matter near the encroachment site while compression from both ventral and dorsal was essential to make maximum stress appear in the grey matter. The existence of canal encroachment can reduce the safe range for spinal cord activities, and hypermobility activities may induce spinal cord injury. Besides, the ligamentum flavum plays an important role in the development of central canal syndrome.Significance.This model will enable researchers to have a better understanding of the influence of cervical degenerative diseases on the spinal cord during extension and flexion.

A compact DEA-based soft peristaltic pump for power and control of fluidic robots.

Fluid-driven robotic systems typically use bulky and rigid power supplies, considerably limiting their mobility and flexibility. Although various forms of low-profile soft pumps have been demonstrated, they either are limited to specific working fluids or generate limited flow rates or pressures, making them ill-suited for widespread robotics applications. In this work, we introduce a class of centimeter-scale soft peristaltic pumps for power and control of fluidic robots. An array of high power density robust dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) (each weighing 1.7 grams) were adopted as soft motors, operated in a programmed pattern to produce pressure waves in a fluidic channel. We investigated and optimized the dynamic performance of the pump by analyzing the interaction between the DEAs and the fluidic channel with a fluid-structure interaction finite element model. Our soft pump achieved a maximum blocked pressure of 12.5 kilopascals and a run-out flow rate of 39 milliliters per minute with a response time of less than 0.1 second. The pump can generate bidirectional flow and adjustable pressure through control of drive parameters such as voltage and phase shift. Furthermore, the use of peristalsis makes the pump compatible with various liquids. To illustrate the versatility of the pump, we demonstrate mixing a cocktail, powering custom actuators for haptic devices, and performing closed-loop control of a soft fluidic actuator. This compact soft peristaltic pump opens up possibilities for future on-board power sources for fluid-driven robots in a variety of applications, including food handling, manufacturing, and biomedical therapeutics.

Mitigating hydrodynamic ram effect by a novel perforated lattice filled tank

High-velocity impact on fluid-filled structures has become an increasingly critical issue for the vulnerability of aircraft fuel tanks. Hydrodynamic Ram (HRAM) is a typical phenomenon that occurs when a flying object impacts against a fluid-filled tank with a high velocity, leading to excessive structural damage and catastrophic failure. Thus, an effective HRAM mitigation method is highly desired to provide better protection for the aircraft fuel tanks. In this paper, a novel perforated lattice filled tank was proposed by filling the empty space inside a fuel tank to mitigate HRAM effect and reduce the shock wave pressure. Perforated lattices were utilized to reduce the cavity expansion and structural damage while the holes on the lattice walls could guarantee the connectivity for each unit cells. Experimental tests were conducted to investigate the impact response and cavity evolution of the perforated lattice filled tanks with 1 × 1, 3 × 3 and 5 × 5 unit cells. The deformations of the front, back and lateral walls of the lattice-filled tanks were recorded by using a high-speed video camera and strain gauges (SG). Besides, A fluid–structure interaction finite element model of the fuel tank based on the SPH method was established to study the mitigation performance of HRAM phenomenon. A parametric analysis was conducted to explore the influence of unit-cell number, impact velocity, volume fraction of fluid and liquid level pressure on the impact response. The results indicated that the structural deformation and damage can be alleviated by the lattice-filled design, and it could be considered as an effective solution to mitigate the HRAM effect.

Nonlinear multiscale analysis of coronary atherosclerotic vulnerable plaque artery: fluid-structural modeling with micromechanics.

A unique three-dimensional (3D) computational multiscale modeling approach is proposed to investigate the influence of presence of microcalcification particles on the stress field distribution in the thin cap layer of a coronary atherosclerotic vulnerable plaque system. A nested 3D modeling analysis framework spanning the multiscale nature of a coronary atherosclerotic vulnerable plaque is presented. At the microscale level, a micromechanical modeling approach, which is based on computational finite-element (FE) representative unit cell, is applied to obtain the homogenized nonlinear response of the calcified tissue. This equivalent response effectively allows the integration of extremely small microcalcification inclusions in a global biomechanical FE model. Next, at the macroscale level, a 3D patient-based fluid-structure interaction FE model, reconstructing a refined coronary artery geometry with calcified plaque lesion, is generated to study the mechanical behavior of such multi-component biomechanical system. It is shown that the proposed multiscale modeling approach can generate a higher resolution of stress and strain field distributions within the coronary atherosclerotic vulnerable plaque system and allow the assessment of the local concentration stress around the microcalcifications in plaque cap layers. A comparison of stress field distributions within cap layers with and without inclusion of microcalcifications is also presented.

A validated patient-specific FSI model for vascular access in haemodialysis.

The flow rate inside arteriovenous fistulas is many times higher than physiological flow and is accompanied by high wall shear stress resulting in low patency rates. A fluid-structure interaction finite element model is developed to analyse the blood flow and vessel mechanics to elucidate the mechanisms that can lead to failure. The simulations are validated against flow measurements obtained from magnetic resonance imaging data.

Mechanical behavior of an individual adherent MLO-Y4 osteocyte under shear flow.

Mechanical properties of a single cell and its mechanical response under stimulation play an important role in regulating interactions between cell and extracellular matrix and affecting mechanotransduction. Osteocytes exhibit solid-like viscoelastic behavior in response to the interstitial fluid shear resulting from tissue matrix deformation. This study intends to quantitatively describe the mechanical behavior of osteocytes combining in vitro experiment and fluid-structure interaction (FSI) finite element (FE) model. The cell is configured in the FSI FE model using the observed data from quasi-3D images. Instead of simply assigning the cellular viscoelastic parameters by statistical data, the mechanical parameters are determined by an iterative algorithm comparing the experimental and the computational results from the FE model. The viscoelastic parameters of osteocytes are obtained as: the equilibrium elasticity modulus [Formula: see text], instantaneous elasticity modulus [Formula: see text], viscosity coefficient [Formula: see text]. A novel index to quantify the cell adhesion is also put forward. In addition, an interesting competition phenomenon is revealed on the cell surface concerning stress and strain, i.e., the place with high stress has low strain and that with low stress has high strain. The proposed method provides a novel technique to study the mechanical behavior of individual adherent cell in vitro. It is believed that this quantitative technique not only determines cell mechanical behavior but also helps elucidate the mechanism of mechanotransduction in various types of cells.

Fluid-structure interaction analysis of the drop impact test for helicopter fuel tank.

The crashworthiness of helicopter fuel tank is vital to the survivability of the passengers and structures. In order to understand and improve the crashworthiness of the soft fuel tank of helicopter during the crash, this paper investigated the dynamic behavior of the nylon woven fabric composite fuel tank striking on the ground. A fluid–structure interaction finite element model of the fuel tank based on the arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian method was constructed to elucidate the dynamic failure behavior. The drop impact tests were conducted to validate the accuracy of the numerical simulation. Good agreement was achieved between the experimental and numerical results of the impact force with the ground. The influences of the impact velocity, the impact angle, the thickness of the fuel tank wall and the volume fraction of water on the dynamic responses of the dropped fuel tank were studied. The results indicated that the corner of the fuel tank is the most vulnerable location during the impact with ground.

Simulation of motor current waveforms in monitoring aortic valve state during ventricular assist device support.

Monitoring of aortic valve (AV) opening and closure during left ventricular assist device (LVAD) heart pump support is crucial in preventing AV abnormalities and remodeling caused by anomalous resirculation. In this study, simulations of LVAD motor current waveforms were undertaken to investigate AV response to rotary blood pump assistance, as well as to detect AV open and close status under heart failure conditions. A two-dimensional fluid-structure interaction finite-element model is presented to predict AV state during LVAD outflow. The data will be useful in the development of a pump speed controller for optimal management of pump outflow.

Simulation of aortic valve dynamics during ventricular support.

Existing commercially-used left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) make no attempt to automatically detect the aortic valve condition in their control methods to optimize ventricular assistance. An important design goal for LVADs is the ability to reliably and accurately detect aortic valve (AV) states during heart pump support that can cause harmful effects on AV structure and function. In this paper, we have investigated the correlation between AV performance and LVAD motor current as well as speed set points, simulating aortic valve blood flow, pressure, pump flow and LV mechanics using a simplified two-dimensional fluid-structure interaction finite-element model of AV dynamics.

Reverse Pupillary Block Slows Iris Contour Recovery From Corneoscleral Indentation

Corneoscleral indentation changes the iris contour and alters the angle between the iris and cornea. Although this effect has long been observed, the mechanism by which it occurs remains poorly understood. Previous theoretical research has shown that corneoscleral indentation can deform the eye globe and consequently rotate the iris root. In this work, we studied the fluid-structure interaction between the iris and aqueous humor, driven by iris root rotation. The iris root rotation obtained from our previous whole-globe model was used as a boundary condition for a fluid-structure interaction finite element model of the anterior eye. We studied the effect of two parameters-rotation angle and indentation speed-on the iris contour and aqueous humor dynamics. We found that posterior rotation of the iris root caused posterior bowing of the iris. After the iris root was returned to its original orientation, the aqueous humor was trapped in the anterior chamber because the iris tip pinned against the lens (reverse pupillary block). After 0.5-2 min of simulation, aqueous humor secretion into the posterior chamber and outflow from the anterior chamber allowed the system to return to its original steady state flow condition. The faster or farther the iris root rotated, the longer it took to return to steady state. Reverse pupillary block following corneoscleral indentation is a possible explanation for the clinical observation that prevention of blinking causes the iris to drift forward.
